Since coming to Essex, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. Being an hour away from London really paid off when I was invited to join in the Introductory Playwriting Group hosted by the Royal Court Theatre. I had to commute in every Monday for about three months to attend workshops. In addition to being able to experience the multi-cultural city and everything it had to offer, I have found Colchester to be my home away from home. Many students work and continue to stay on in the town during and after their studies, providing a tight community of people who go on to invest in the arts here. The people who work at the Lakeside Theatre on campus and teach my courses are also the same people you see running events at the Colchester Arts Centre, for example, or are working at the Mercury Theatre in town. This creates opportunities for networking and involving myself in off-campus activities that contribute to my CV as an artist.

Essex is a place where you are encouraged to get out of your comfort zone and find your tribe. In addition to getting to know people who are passionate about the arts, you are also able to create or be a part of societies that center around other interests. I was President of the Writing Society last year and played a part in cultivating a space for writing enthusiasts from all walks of life. It is definitely a memory that I hold close to my heart, and an experience that was supported by the university and Student’s Union (SU).
